Gay Retirement Communities More Popular
Residential communities for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender population are gaining popularity nationwide, with four already completed and 19 more in the works.
Among these is the Palms of Manasota near Bradenton, Fla., with townhomes and detached homes priced from $190,000 and $299,000, respectively. Other gay developments are more affordable, such as the 278-unit Resort on Carefree Boulevard near Fort Myers, Fla.
Buyers will spend about $90,000 for a recreational vehicle lot. Upscale gay communities include RainbowVision in Santa Fe, N.M., where the first phase of 20 condominiums all sold for $270,000 apiece.
These projects do not discriminate and welcome heterosexual couples as well.
Same-sex couples are flocking to such developments because they can freely walk hand-in-hand and do not have to fear being isolated or discriminated against should they be forced to move into the long-term care facilities located in some communities.
Both the Palms of Manasota and RainbowVision, for instance, offer assisted-living services.
